Section I-A: Introduction of Topic

With the 2004 Presidential election coming up, now is the time for citizens to start speaking out. With the passing of the twenty-sixth amendment in 1971 those who are eighteen and older have been given the right to speak out and vote in the presidential election. You would think that college students would be more inclined to vote due to the fact that they have had to wait for eighteen years to do so. Sadly, it is people from the ages of eighteen to thirty that have the lowest voter turnout at the polls.

This not only boggles me it also makes me scared that people don’t care about the future of our country. It is only through voting that we can speak out about issues and problems we have with today’s government. Nothing will be done with our society if we stay at home on Election Day.

I ask myself, why aren’t people voting? Why has there been a decline in the number of voters my age? Was it because Americans are generally becoming lazy? Was it because college students are afraid to voice their opinions? I am eager to find out why college students in particular are not voting in elections and hopefully find ways to spread the word on the importance of voting. It is a serious problem that is plaguing the United States and it needs to be fixed. The more people that get involved with voting will only help with our nation’s unity. Through unity we can take on any international as well as domestic issues, thus making America a more pleasurable place to live and raise our families.

Title: The Growth of Online Dating
(TOPIC AREA: Net Trends and Trivia)

Within less than 2 years there has been an enormous increase of singles in the United States who have logged on to web sites designed for dating purposes. In 2001, nearly 6 million people perused the personals (3). With a jump to 26.6 million singles in December of 2002 alone, we can see that the personals sites have overcome the negative connotations they have received in the past and have become a legitimized thing to do when single (2). These statistics only prove that there has been much acceptance in using the World Wide Web for everyday activities. Not only has the online dating percents increased, but the use of the Internet in general due to the growing numbers of online daters.

The reason why the Internet based dating services are so popular is due to many factors. One factor is relatively simple, rather than going to a bar and taking your chances on the nearest attractive person, you can pick and choose what characteristics you are looking for in your mate. Many of the dating sites target a smaller audience such as DoggieDating.com that is for pet lovers and Jdate.com for single Jewish people looking for a date (2). The fast-pace is another reason why people are turning to the web for love. People are getting to know each other much faster than meeting random people in an airport through the dating web (3).

Online dating has been a big success for the advertising world lately. Just recently have we seen commercials on TV, heard them on the radio and even seen them in Valentines Day cards. Hallmark has designed four cards that are associated with online dating for Valentine’s Day this year (1). The strategic placement of the TV commercials has also increased online dating. The leader in online dating web sites, Match.com has been placing their commercials during shows such as Joe Millionaire and The Bachelorette to target singles (1). It is almost certain that we will be seeing more dating web sites due to the growing popularity and acceptability of them.
