My Life in Brief:
I was in born 1972, in upstate New York: Rochester
to be specific. I moved around quite a bit as a child but stayed in the
Rochester area. Actually, I lived with my grandparents for most of my
early life. Eventually my parents settled down outside a quiet little
town called Canandaigua and I moved out there with them and started seventh
grade. The name Canandaigua means "The Chosen Place" in the language
of the Seneca Indians, who lived there originally. It really is a beautiful
place and there are many sites to see as the town has roots back into the 1700's.
I went to high school at Canandaigua Academy and graduated in 1989, before going
to the University of Rochester. Interestingly, this is the school affiliated
with the hospital in which I was born.
While at the U of R, I majored in Molecular Genetics but
I really did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I joined Sigma
Phi Epsilon fraternity during my freshman year and stayed very busy playing
every intramural sport I could. My life was very difficult during these
years and eventually my stay at the U of R was cut short when I came down with
a virus similar to mono. I was given a medical leave of absence and left
school. This was a very important junction for me.
I decided not to return to school and instead joined the
working world. I got a job working with developmentally disabled adults
in a group home. It was very inspirational and it was during this time
that many pieces of my life came together. First, it gave me direction.
I came to know that I wanted to go to medical school. Second, and more
importantly, I met my fiancee, Amanda. She worked for the same organization,
but at a different house. It truly was love at first sight.
Amanda had lived all of her life in New York as well, and
after the two of us were in two accidents in one winter, neither one of which
was our fault, we decided to find someplace warmer to live. We chose North
Carolina. We moved in the August of 1997 and after a short time, I decided
that the time was right for me to go back to school. I started part time
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the spring of 1998 and
I have not stopped taking classes since. I expected to finish in the spring
of 1999, but decided to stay longer so I could take some classes in various
areas that I find interesting. Now I will finish in December of 1999.
I am currently applying to medical schools and hope to start
in the fall of 2000. After that...who knows!!!
