"The best answer to the question, 'What is the most
effective method of teaching?' is that it depends on the goal, the
students, the content, and the teacher. But the next best answer is
students teaching other students? (Wilbert
McKeachie)
My
philosophy of education is based on the idea that the primary goal of
an education for our students is to help them to learn how to think
critically, how to ask the important questions, and how to answer those
questions. One way of fostering this is to use
scientific inquiry in the lessons that you teach.

I am particularly interested in
promoting and incorporating marine
sciences into K-12 curriculum. Coral reefs and a host of other
ecosystems are under tremendous stress from
natural and anthropogenic
causes. If we are to ensure that future generations enjoy and
appreciate these natural wonders then it is significantly important
that we educate them
as early as possible.
In an effort to contribute to this effort I have volunteered in various
capacities. These include:
- setting up touch tanks in local
schools
- participating in GK-12 Fellowship Program
- mentoring students at all educational levels
- volunteering at science fairs at local schools
- assisting local teachers with environmental clubs
- participating in beach and river clean-up campaigns
- volunteering as a science judge for the National Ocean Science
bowl (South Carolina/Georgia Regional)
