A native Arkansan, I came to North Carolina in 2000 as a member of Alltel Communication’s Leadership Development Program. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma the previous year, with a Bachelor of Arts in public administration and had been unsure as to whether or not I wanted to attend graduate school right away; so, I went to work. Unsatisfied with the corporate grind, though the compensation was exceptional, I chose to resign and accepted a graduate fellowship to attend North Carolina State University’s MPA program. After completing my degree requirements in 2002, I immediately entered the public policy PhD program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program was not a good fit for me; so, I transferred into the PhD program in Political Science where I am currently dissertating.

I am currently a project director with the Community-Campus Partnership in the UNC School of Government. Prior to this position, I served two years as the associate director for the Center for the Study of the American South and an assistant director with the UNC Program on Public Life. I am married to Michael Cotton, who is an assistant basketball coach at Bucknell University and the mother of three young children, a 9-year old daughter Jarah and two boys-Kael, age 6 and Rhys, age 3.
