Discover the rich geologic history of our continent by seeing it! Geological Sciences 46, The Geology of North America, is a field-based course that will take you to some of the most spectacular geology on Earth. Most of the instruction will take place during an eight-day field trip over spring break to the Grand Canyon and surrounding areas.

Geological Sciences 46 is a 3-credit natural science perspective that can also count towards either a minor or a major in Geological Sciences. NOTE: This class has controlled enrollment and is restricted to Freshman and Sophomores or upper division students by permission. Students wishing to enroll should contact Prof. Kevin Stewart 962-0683.

 

Prerequisites:

Any introductory Geological Sciences class numbered below 42, including any Geological Sciences First-Year Seminar.

Field trip cost:
Most of the ground transportation, meals, and lodging for Geol. 46 will be covered by the Department of Geological Sciences. Students will be responsible for roundtrip airfare from RDU to Phoenix plus a supplement to cover some of the ground transportation costs (~$300 for airfare, ~$50 for ground transporation).

Saturday, March 6 - Depart RDU, fly to Phoenix, drive to Sedona AZ, camp at Chavez Crossing campground.

Sunday, March 7 - Sedona to SP Mountain via Oak Creek Canyon, SP Mountain to South Rim Grand Canyon, Camp at Mather Campground, Grand Canyon National Park

Monday, March 8
- Hike South Kaibab Trail, Grand Canyon. Camp at Mather, Campground Grand Canyon National Park

Tuesday, March 9
- Tour Grand Canyon South Rim; South Rim to Glen Canyon Dam/Lake Powell. Camp at Wahweap Campground Lake Powell

Wednesday, March 10
- Glen Canyon to Moab Utah via Monument Valley, Goosenecks of the San Juan,
Mexican Hat. Camp at Devil’s Garden campground Arches National Park

Thursday, March 11
- Hike in Arches National Park, Camp at Devil’s Garden campground

Friday, March 12
- Arches National Park to Canyon De Chelly, Camp at Cottonwood campground Canyon de Chelly

Saturday, March 13
- Canyon de Chelly to Phoenix via Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest. Stay in motel in Phoenix

Sunday, March 14
- Depart Phoenix, arrive RDU
