Gay Rights Movement:

Same-Sex Marriage

Within the Gay Right’s Movement, a movement that grew out of the Civil Rights and Women’s Movements of the 1960s and 70s, there are as many issues facing activists today as there were forty years ago. Lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender and transsexual people, and their heterosexual allies are working for changes that include the passage of civil rights laws to include the rights of queer people, stricter hate crime laws, equal housing and work place protection, decriminalization of sodomy, parenting rights, and the repeal of anti-same-sex marriage laws already in place, to name a few. An issue that has both strong support and vehement opposition even within the queer community is the legalization of same-sex marriage. Over the course of this semester, we hope to learn more about this controversial issue, the arguments by queer people who are for or against, and the place of marriage rights for same-sex couples within the larger movement as a whole.
