A recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a major in Mathematical Decision Sciences and a minor in Jazz Studies, David has been performing since middle school and is familiar with an array of different styles of music with the acoustic upright bass as well as electric. David grew up with bluegrass in his blood as he started attending bluegrass festivals with his dad, Wayne, at a very young age. It was not until around the age of 12, however, that he decided to pursue music himself. Since then, David has played all over North Carolina in a variety of groups and styles including bluegrass, rock, jazz, orchestra, and big band.
David's current band, GrassStreet, is a contemporary bluegrass band based out of central North Carolina and is characterized by its hard driving sound, tight harmonies, and strong instrumentalists. David, together with his dad on guitar, helps to provide the solid rhythmic foundation for this group that gives the band its unique sound and fuels the intense drive that can be heard at their live shows.
While at UNC, David was active in the jazz studies program where he studied under John V. Brown and played upright bass in the UNC Jazz Band & Jazz Combos. He is featured on their most recent CD, “From One To Another.” David is still active in the Triangle area where you can see him in various small jazz ensembles and jam sessions.
David can be heard with the Chapel Hill acoustic jamgrass band, Run of the Mill, from time to time as a bass sub or acoustic guitarist. He has also recorded and performed with the Christian rock band DeeperStill and helped to start the music program at Campus Crossroads, a student church on the UNC campus. David works full time as a web designer for the Educational Technology Group in the UNC School of Medicine.
And if it's anytime between November and March, you'll see David decked out in Carolina blue rooting for his alma mater and the 2005 National Champions. This year, however, he'll be doing that along with getting ready to marry his Tar Heel sweetheart, Steffi Whitfield, on April 8, 2006.
