Ganymede Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Ganymede is the home to Carterhall Commander N Chief (Dash) and Carterhall Thystledown Virtue (Monkey). These two wonderful Corgis are the joy of our lives, and share a home with myself, my husband, and our son Gus.

On this site you will be able to learn a little more about our dogs and about the origin of our name. Please visit the individual pages for additional information.

Dash

chasing

Dash was born July 11, 2005. His name comes both from a football reference: the forty yard dash and from the character Dash in The Incredibles ™ because he is "super speedy." He is a red and white male with four white socks. He is currently being shown in conformation. He is quite flashy and has a good time in the show ring. Eventually I hope to compete with him in Obedience. Visit Dash's Page.

Monkey

Monkey was born January 18, 2006. Her name as a puppy was Honey. She soon proved herself to be quite an imp and became "the Honey Monkey." Now she is more commonly called Monkey. She is a red-headed tri, also with four white socks. She is also a "super speedy" Corgi - which is a high complement in Gus' view. She will compete with me in Obedience and Agility. She is much smaller than Dash. Visit Monkey's Page.

Ganymede

Just where did the name Ganymede come from? No, it is not a nod to the Greek Gods. I am a huge fan of P.G. Wodehouse stories. I always thought I'd get a tri-color Male Corgi, and name him "Jeeves" as Corgis can be bossy little dogs. However, our first Corgi is a young Red male, who, while bossy and assertive, did not strike me as a Jeeves. So we'll save that name for later. Ganymede comes from The Junior Ganymede Club - an organization to which Jeeves and other Gentleman's Gentlemen belong.

I spent a lot of time picking out a suitable name to mesh both with the breed, and our interests. Another concern is to be considerate of other kennels and dog fanciers. In order to avoid taking a name that is already in use, I searched two US databases: 1. the "Dogs Lookup" feature from the AKC store and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFFA) Database , I scrolled through the names listed on various European Corgi Club websites, and I used Google to be sure that no one else was using the name. Other names I investigated included a nod to the Norse Gods: Valhalla and Valkyrie - but both were in use by other recognized breeders (Corgi or other herding breeds), Gefion - star of a Danish legend and heroine on my favorite fountain in Denmark -- and also in use by another breeder, and a few others that might not be pronounceable ringside in the United States.

Dog Registries

thbbbbbbbbt

There are several purebred dog registries in the United States. The American Kennel Club is the most often recognized. The United Kennel Club is another registry, which offers conformation and performance titles. Then there are the false registries, often associated with puppy millers. One such registry is the Continental Kennel Club (CKC) not to be confused with the legitimate CKC - The Canadian Kennel Club.
