The Concept of

Intentional Action

Joshua Knobe

Princeton University

What do people mean when they say that a behavior was performed intentionally? This series of experiments was designed to help address that question. At times, the results are surprising.

After completing each experiment, you will receive a brief statement of the hypothesis, the results from other subjects, and some speculations about the psychological mechanisms that underlie those results.

These experiments have already been presented in various journal articles. They are being reproduced online for demonstration purposes only. No data is being collected, and your responses will not be recorded in any way.
