ReSeARCh
What is this?
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC-CH requires students to take JOMC 50, Electronic Information. In this class, we were required to research a topic. The research consisted of using library and Internet resources by using various research tactics.
Topic:
The Rolling Stones (English Rock Bands)
Section I: Introduce Your Topic and Keywords
After deciding among various topic, I chose a subject that interested me and that I knew would have material available: The Rolling Stones. I had to narrow my search after not finding enough material on 'British rock bands' and 'British rock bands of the 1960s'. I've been listening to the Stones since I was a child and own most of their albums. They were a classic rock group from England that became and still is one of the most famous and respectable bands not only in England, but in the U.S. Questions I would like to answer through research are:
How "big"
are the tours? How much money do they (the tours) bring in? Do the Rolling
Stones only play in front of large crowds?
How have the Rolling Stones influenced the music society?
The intended audience for the research can be general. The audience primarily concerns people who enjoy classic rock, in particular, the Rolling Stones. People who grew up during the first thirty years of the band are now in their 40s and 50s. Generally, these people read newspapers and magazines such as Rolling Stone.

TITLE: The Rolling Stones:
The World's Greatest Rock Band?
(Topic Area: The Rolling Stones)
Ever since Elvis sang his first song and the Beatles set foot in the U.S., the debate as to whom is the greatest rock band has been a constant argument. As the years pass and more bands join together, the list gets longer. No matter what poll you look at, classic rock bands and artists from England have dominant positions: the Beatles, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Elton John. According to a large following of fans, one of these British bands, the Rolling Stones, "are arguably the 'Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.'"
According to a 2001 poll of the 100 greatest artists of hard rock by music station VH1, the Rolling Stones rank 67th. The magazine Spin ranks the Rolling Stones ninth in a poll of the 50 greatest bands. (3) If polls were ased on how much revenue the band makes touring, the Rolling Stones lead all bands, making $121.2 million in their 1994 tour, $17.7 million more than the next band, Pink Floyd. (4)
Is it possible for one band to be the greatest rock band in the world? When Andrew Loog Oldham discovered the Rolling Stones, he believed that they would become the greatest rock group if they performed liked they needed to. Oldham once said, "Stars must be killers, always striking first and last." (1) To most people, the Rolling Stones fit the description of what a rock band should be. Keith Richards, guitarist of the Rolling Stones, claimed that it was absurd for people to title the group the world's greatest rock band, especially since the title came to be known in the 1970s after the break up of the Beatles. I believe that the Rolling Stones are one of the greatest bands to ever be introduced to the world, however, each person has his or her own definition of the greatest band. In my opinion, Richards puts it best by saying, "On any given night, a different band can be the greatest in the world, when nothing goes wrong and it's flying." (2).
