This is just enough info dribbled to intrigue you, but (hopefully) not enough to bore you.
interests
I am really into music-all kinds of music. And as far as I'm concerned, live is better.
These are friends of mine performing in the band Jam Pain Society. Sample some of their music-they're contagious! Here are some other musicians I listen to:- Leon Russel Honky tonk blues from the bayou.
- Robert Mirabal Navajo musician, author, and flutemaker.
- Foo Fighters For when you just have to bang your head.
- Trans-Siberian Orchestra Again and again.
I am equally enamoured with history-all kinds of history. Visits to heritage sites, living history re-enactments, and-of course-books.
Last semester, for Dr. Saye's History of the Book class, I researched Ogham and the Book of Ballymote. A page from the book is pictured to the right.
I am way into Celtic history, but also have interests in:
- Elizabethan, especially the playright/poet/spy Christopher Marlowe
- Colonial shading into Revolution era United States, especially North Carolina, more especially William Hooper, James Iredell and the Regulators
- ancient Rome
- and last but not least, 18th dynasty Egypt, especially during the reign of Akhenhaton
hobbies
Besides reading, which I do pretty much incessantly, I also:
- -am a silversmith (currently non-practicing due to an absolute dearth of time)
- -love to fiddle with all sorts of plants-my desk at work is a veritable jungle
- -both eating and cooking rank pretty far up there too
books -- books -- books
I'm immersed in them at work-analyzing them, cataloging them, and of course, perusing them.I am an unrepentant Genre Queen. My favorites are:
- historical mysteries-hold the romance; three authors I like are Anne Perry, Elizabeth Peters, and Lindsay Davis' Marcus Didious Falco series, set in Rome during the tenure of Vespasian
- any by Dorothy L. Sayers
- contemporary mysteries with an interesting twist to the protagonist-like Martha Grimes' Richard Jury, or Margaret Maron's Judge Deborah Knott
- fantasy, when I can find some that isn't retreads of Tolkien, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Ann McCaffrey or Andre Norton.
- Terry Pratchett, whose fantasy parodies make me laugh and think in equal measure
The absolute BEST book I have read in the last couple of years, though, was Blood Done Sign My Name by Tim Tyson. Hands down.

movies
I'm pretty much a one-note Jenni here: I don't go to the movies to think. Except for Mr. Gore's opus....
- Pirates!-both The Black Pearl and Deadman's Chest
- Lord of the Rings trilogy-not as much as the book, but a very vivid interpretation.
- Star Wars all six episodes.
- Quest for the Holy Grail
- Princess Bride
- L.A. Story
- and, totally out of left field, Gosford Park

school-past and present
I finished my MA in Public History, with a concentration in Archival Science, at NCSU in May 2006. I am halfway through my MLS here at SILS-I hope to be done in the Spring of 2008. I started at SILS thinking that I wanted to work in Special Collections, in an adademic setting, since I am still avidly interested in history. But, since taking several classes here at UNC, I've found:- That I really like Reference work-Tommy and Pam have really shown us the rewards, while not glossing over the warts, in my Ref class this semester.
- I'm rethinking my desire to get away from the cataloging side of information-as I've been exposed to more complicated situations at NCSU, information organization has become more interesting.
- Learning more about databases in INLS 461 has given me a new appreciation for the work I do with NCSU's institutional depository.
- And the founder of NoveList, who we had as a guest speaker in Ref class, opened my eyes wider to the non-institutional possibilities of my some-day-to-be acquired MLS.
last and least-my social life
I'm just being snarky-I wish I had more time to hang out with:
- My family-my niece and I went to a concert at Alltel Pavilion in August-I think that was my last big throwdown. But we went to Ocean Isle in October (it was awesome), and we ate at Wasabi just last week for my nephew's 13th birthday.
- I work with lots of interesting peeps-unfortunately, the powers-that-be do attempt to limit our socializing.
- My long-suffering and patient friends, who wonder if I'll ever finish school and be available for fun again.
