where I go on the web
webbing at work
- OCLC
for those of you who've been asleep since you got to SILS, it stands for Online Computer Library Center. This is the catalogers bible for formats and standards, not to mention contributed records, especially when combined with -
- Worldcat
These two stay open on my screen all day. I shudder to think what life-especially for librarians-was like back in the card catalog days. (Since this is a proxy URL which requires a password, I'm just linking to the home site.)
- Library of Congress
For those times you need the authorities, not to mention subject headings.
- NCSU Academic Departments
Since I spend a lot of time verifying identities for faculty and graduate students, in their capacity as authors for items in our digital repository, I'm in and out of this portal a lot too. You haven't lived until you've tried to track down a RA, who has a) graduated five years ago, b) married, divorced, or changed their name more than twice for whatever reasons, c) left the country, and/or 4) gone to work with one of the fused and complex acronymed entities comprised of specialists, from various disciplines, holding joint appointments with two or more universities. Its like, "don't these people want the credit for their work?" (Sorry-I know this isn't where I'm supposed to rant.)
30 second escapes when necessary

- gocomics
Although since Aaron McGruder has bailed, (I'll mourn him along with Bill Watterson) I only get my Doonesbury fix there now.
- Dilbert
I know some people think this one has gotten tired, (along with the late, lamented "Cathy") but I still giggle sometimes. And sometimes a giggle is really necessary.
- Nag's Head webcam
Sometimes this is just the pick me up I need, since I love the beach, and would like to move there when I'm done with school. Sometimes it just makes my cabin fever worse.
webbing for school
Blackboard
-- Enough said. (For some reason, I had a much less problematic relationship with Vista at NCSU. Vista never corrupted or devoured my papers.)
- UNC's OPAC
And it's sister and brother OPAC's at NCSU and Duke, to name just two.
webbing for news
- BBC News Online
For less ethnocentric and more in depth news coverage than the United States versions. (Katy Couric has got above her raisin' I'd say.)
- WRAL
Along with the Raleigh News and Observer, for when you want to know about the traffic, the State Fair schedule, or what shenanigans the NC legislature has been up to now.
- Wilmington Star News
Well, like I said, I want to move to the beach, and it has to be a town big enough to support a university and/or public library. I've also been interested in their perspective on the report of the commission on the 1898 Wilmington Riots-an incident long overdue for recognition and recompense. Their writing style is also fun-not very stiff would be understating it; they make the N&O sound like the New York Times with regard to colloquialisms.
trolling for gossip
PerezHilton.com For when you just can't go another minute without an update on the antics of Paris, Brittney and Lindsay. (We are all just so over Nicole.) But it'll bring lots of spam attacks, so be forewarned.
I do check email.
