My band history

I have had the amazing privilege of playing in a number of bands over the years. Here is the story:

The Bands

The Sunspots [1989-90]

members:

Paul Calloway- guitar, vocals; Keith Sigel- guitar, bass

The sunspots was my first foray into the glamorous life of the rock band member. The Sunspots were for the most part a duo, although we did have a drummer for a day. (exactly one day-- until his mom threw us out of his house.)

We played a mix of covers and originals but never really met with the success we were due.

swerve [1992-93]

members:

Ed Brezeale- drums; Linc Hancock- bass, vocals; Keith Sigel- guitar; Tommy Eddins- guitar; Kerry Shepherd- vocals; later Will Dyson- vocals;

swerve played a show before a crowd of 2000, but they were for the most part a captive audience. Originally a cover band with a few classic rock sounding originals, swerve eventually evolved into an original outing with modern rock pretensions. swerve's live shows consisted of a few parties and dances, and our climax was a coveted spot in the Broughton high school 'Queen of Hearts' showcase. We performed our own arrangement of Pachelbel's canon, and enjoyed every minute of it. Our final performance was at Broughton's battle of the bands, and featured new vocalist Will Dyson. Some of the tunes performed in this farewell show were 'dreamweaver', firehose's 'freeway', amd a number of originals.

Fat Richard [1994]

members:

Will Dyson- vocals, percussion; David E Lee- guitar, vocals; Keith Sigel- string bass

Fat Richard formed to perform in a talent competition in February of 1994. Featuring the amazing two-part harmonies of Will Dyson and David E Lee, F.R.'s career was cut short by a morale crushing loss in the Enloe Variety Show.

Blades Elliot/ Vervain [1995-6]

members:

Jeremy Spidell- vocals, guitar; Nathan Moehlmann- guitar; Scott Ogle- Drums; Keith Sigel- bass ,vocals

Vervain's main aspiration was to be a "chapel hill band". They played a set of originals which sounded like a mix of pavement and bedhead. Vervain's crowning achievement was a canceled show at the local 506 and a three way tie in the Battle of the Bands with Anna to the infinite power and The Trout Band.

Mr. Coffee and the Drips

members:

Dan Cox- guitar, vocals, bass; Keith Sigel- bass, guitar, vocals; Scott Ogle- drums, vocals

Mr. Coffee and the Drips played two gigs in their short but prolific career. The first was a prime spot opening for the world famous Jackopierce. Mr. Coffee was known for their hit 'misdemeanor' and for their lesser known classics, 'psycho ex girlfriend' and 'mr. coffee's theme'.

Mr. Coffee and the Drips II

members:

Keith Eaker- guitar, vocals; Alfred Kang- bass; Keith Sigel- guitar; Scott Ogle- drums

Mr. Coffee II was the less successful followup to the original Mr. Coffee. Although arguably more musically talented, Mr. Coffee II's choice to focus on playing covers of obscure 80's pop songs was its downfall.

The Red Brick Trio

members:

Minesh Minstry - Guitar; John Doe- Sax; Keith Sigel- bass; Scott Ogle- drums

Although many considered The Red Brick Trio to be a local supergroup, combining members of Vervain, Skokie's Playfield, and Earl, this outfit never quite achieved their self-ascribed reputation. Assembled to perform at a local art show, the Red Brick Trio aspired to perform improv jazz inspired rock. Unfortunately, the songs often deteriorated into 8 minute dirges that were exhilirating primarily for those who were performing them. Red Brick got its 15 minutes of fame on UNC STV's Limelight.

The Balance Affect

members:

Jeff Clarke- vocals, guitar; Marcus Johnson- Drums; Keith Sigel- bass, vocals; Derek Baird - guitar

Playing with The Balance Affect was one of the highlights of my career. Originally a trio, we eventually accumulated the services of Derek Baird, local virtuoso. We had stars in our eyes, but we got a little too caught up in ourselves. There were some wonderful shows: the cat's cradle, local 506, the cave, go studios, fat city, mojo's, the lighthouse, boo's hideaway, linda's, p-bobs, he's not here, the double door, the brewery, the neighborhood theater. We made a neat 6 track demo in our storage space rehearsal area, and recorded a couple of tracks with Steve (can't remember his name now) something in Carrboro. It was fun. The funniest part was, nearly two years after breaking up, one of our songs was featured on a pretty big compilation (NC vs. NE).

Roads Turn Gray

members:

Alex Rhodes- guitar, vox; Joel Turner- guitar, vox;  Keith Sigel- bass, vox; Grae Baker- guitar; and sometimes, Carter Ward- percussion

OK, so I was only in RTG for like two shows, but it was fun. We played at a dance marathon, and at the E Franklin Block Party (nearly 5 years after MR Coffee debuted at that same event). RTG's demise would herald the coming of allday afternoon.

allday afternoon

members:

Alex Rhodes- guitar, vox; Joel Turner- guitar, vox; KJ Straub- guitar, vox; Keith Sigel- bass, vox; Nick Wagner- drums

I love these guys. The Balance Affect taught me alot- mainly that I should just sit back and enjoy the music. We are not cool indie rockers. We just want to have fun. And man, we have had some fun shows. I won't go into too much detail about ADA, cause you can read all about us on our website- but if this is the last band i ever play in, I went out the way I wanted to.
