Includes 87 manuscripts from the history of English manuscripts from the 7th century until the end of the Gothic period. Provides a glossary. Two chapters treat Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, “Romanesque Illumination 1066-1120” and “Transitional and Early Gothic illumination c.1180-1290.

Comprehensive inventory of 229 manuscripts with 50 black and white illustrations. Includes five indexes: manuscripts (place located and institution), author and title, place of origin and provenance, dates and iconographic content. Unique because Ohlgren includes iconography, interesting to browse.

Unique in that Temple provides descriptions and illustrations for all known illuminated manuscripts world wide from this period. Indexes by format, place of origin, name and library. Black and white plates, very thorough descriptions with 370 illustrations.
