Incredible resource with over 26 million words and 45,000 signed articles. Provides bibliography for the articles and hyperlinks cross-referenced words in the definitions. Manuscript, illumination is listed and “Anglo-Saxon art” and “Romanesque art” are hyperlinked.

 

Ross, Leslie. Medieval Art: A Topical Dictionary. Greenwood : Westport , 1996.

Christian art from 1st to 15th c., covering themes in Christian, western medieval and Byzantine art. Entries are alphabetized, cross-referenced and include directions where to find an illustrative example. There is a general index and an index of Saint’s names. Sample entries include “ St Albans ” and “manuscripts”.

Szarmach, Paul E. ed. Medieval England : An Encyclopedia. New York : Garnd , 1998.

Contains more than 700 entries listed alphabetically from the 5th to 16th c. and includes entries devoted to medieval art and the illumination of manuscripts. Also provides a history of the medieval church and society for some interesting background reading.

Walther, Ingo F. Codices Illustres: The World’s Most Famous Illuminated Manuscripts  

               400-1600. London : Köln, 2001.

A beautiful work in itself, Codices provides descriptions of 167 “most beautiful, most significant, most famous illuminated manuscripts.” All in color, the manuscripts are organized chronologically and are introduced with an overview including the date, origin, extent, language, format, miniaturist, illustrations, provenance, and facsimile. There is an extensive glossary, artist biographies and bibliography. Provides an overview of manuscript illumination creation in the West and outside Europe . There is one Anglo-Saxon manuscript listed: The Winchester Bible (1160-1178) on page 136.
