The Orange County School Board must delay plans to builda new elementary school

in the fall of 2003 for a year. The delay is a result of a need for water and sewer

hookups, which require approval from the Chapel Hill Town Council.

Two men, both of Wilmington, were rescued by the Coast Guard on Wednesday

after spending 24 hours in life preservers. The men's boat capsized at about 2 p.m. on

Tuesday while they were fishing. One of the men was released from the hospital, while

the other remains in good condition.

A Hickory, N.C., man was thrown from his car and killed Monday night after his car went off

the road as he tried to exit just west of Asheville on Interstate 40. Two passengers in the

car were treated for minor injuries.

A Cincinnati man was killed Monday at about 2 p.m. after riding his motorcycle

on Shaw Avenue in Durham. The man was thrown from his motorcycle, and the bike hit

two women sitting in front of a house. The two women were injured, but are in stable

condition.
