Dr. Lucila Vargas's main academic interest has been communication for social change. Her teaching areas include international communication, qualitative methods, and gender and communication. Her book, Social Uses and Radio Practices. The Use of Radio by Ethnic Minorities in Mexico (Westview Press, 1995), and other publications pay special attention to the role of media in the reproduction of social distinctions (i.e., class, gender, race and ethnicity). She recently edited the anthology Women Faculty of Color in the White Classroom (Peter Lang, 2002), and her work has been published in Fem, The Howard Journal of Communication, The Journal of Communication, The Urban Review, Social Education, and Critical Studies in Media Communication. She is currently working on an action-research project that explores the potential of critical media literacy for the practice of democratic citizenship among immigrant, working-class Latina young women.

She received a Chapman Family Faculty Fellowship from the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, and she was Professor-in-Residence of the Year-at-Seville Study Abroad Program. Also, she was nominated by her students as a Distinguished Member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. At present, she is on the North Carolina Humanities Council.

She came to UNC in 1994, after teaching for two years at Bowling Green State University. Also, she taught at the USA Branch Campus de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in San Antonio, Texas (1980-1986).
