STROBE: Stromboli-Etna, 2001
In May, 2001, researchers from the University of North Carolina, University of Florence, University of Hawaii,
Geomar (Germany) participated in an intensive monitoring effort coordinating numerous scientific investigation
of the explosive behavior of these extremely active volcanoes. Professor Jonathan Lees and student April McGreger
installed broadband seismic equipment and infrasonic microphones to examine the nature of explosive activity
and harmonic tremor at the volcano vents.
For a period of 10 days installations at Stromboli were recorded. Activity was particularly high at both Stromboli and Etna. Both Stromboli and Etna each had active lava flows as well as extensive explosivity. Infrasonic recordings show continuous explosions at each site, some times separated by several seconds.
