“McDonaldization” is based on maximizing efficiency, calculability, and predictability in interactions and transactions.  The result is standardization, homogenization, and depersonalization.

What can compromise quality at McDonald’s

            -Speedà carelessness

-Efficient and calculable food can be gross

-Depersonalization can make us feel bad L

What can threaten “McDonaldization?”

-Our ability to see through it and refuse to play along—( I will have my hamburger medium rare, only white meat for my McNuggets, and could you add extra shamrock to my shamrock shake?)

-Failure to internalize norms- (we all know to bus our own tables.  What if someone doesn’t?)

-Human error

-Human resistance

How do McDonaldized organizations deal with these problems in order to restore to proper degree of McDonaldization?

            -Create the illusion of quality

            -Focus on quantity

            -Use non-human technology whenever possible

What do non-human technologies do to the jobs that they are used in?

What do they do to people in those jobs?
