?

Domination and authority

states compliance and implies a level of acceptance on the part of the dominated

            bureaucracy

not necessarily individuals, but offices and positions regardless of people who fill them

not merely economic superiority, or contractual obligation

there must be legitimacy and belief in the authority

voluntary

ongoing social relationship of structural feature

legitimate

Power

More personal, and (maybe) forceful, “no holds barred”

3 types of authority (P.115)

Legal authority (legitimated on)

Rational grounds- resting on a belief in legality of rules and the right of those elevated to authority under such rules to issue commands

Traditional authority (legitimated on)

Traditional grounds- resting on established belief in the sanctity of immemorial traditions and the legitimacy of those exercising authority under them

Charismatic authority (legitimated on)

Charismatic grounds- resting on devotion to the exceptional sanctity, heroism or exemplary character of an individual person, and of the normative patterns or order revealed or ordained by him

Do these people have legitimate authority?  What kind is it and how is it legitimized?

            Parents

            Tiger Woods as an advertiser

            Dean Smith

Manager at a fast food restaurant

            Hitler

            Terrorist

Social systems of power and stratification

Class

            Purely economic

            Objective

            Un-ideological

            Property vs. lack of property

Not a group

There is a distribution of wealth and goods.  Where one falls on this distribution is their class

Status

Based on groups, and the lifestyles and behaviors common to the embers of the group

There is a social value (honor) associated with these life-styles and groups

Not necessarily economic, but can be closely tied to it.

A country club is a status group.

            It’s a group

            It cultivates a certain lifestyle

And there is a social honor tied to it

Look within the same class and see different status groups

Upper 5% of wealth holders are in the same class, but how might they differ in status?

            New money

            Old money

Any groups whose status has changed?

Parties are groups whose action is oriented to the acquisition of power.  Can be related to either of the previous group, but instead of just existing, they work to actively influence the existing polity
