Lindsay Mangum's Research
Design Magazines
I chose to research design magazines because, as a design major, I read several looking for inpiration, new technologies and programs, and instruction and tips.Design is what interests me most. I currently read Emigre, Print, and Step-By-Step Electronic Design.
My intentions for this research are to find out about other magazines that be of interest to me, to get an idea of specialized magazines pertaining to certain types of design (i.e. book jacket design, album cover design, magazine layout, logodesign), and to review a variety of magazines and to to form a sort of rqanking determined by its ability to service its readers.
My intended audience will be other designers who are also looking for periodicals to keep them current on advances in the design profession. They will want to find magazines which are cutting edge yet fit their design style. These magazines are important for the reason that they serve as a forum for designers and artists to display their work. Designers will want to find magazines where they can locate new and affordable fonts and clip art. Most importantly, my audience will be interested in my topic because these magazines provide a means of communication and unity for the design community.
World Wide Web Sources
Emigre Magazine
http://www.1emigre.com
This is my favorite magazine. You can, subscribe to the magazine, order back issues of the print version, order posters, order music, and buy fonts. This is more for the artistic designer. It is a great source for inspiration. The fonts are the best I've ever seen.
www.graphics.com
http://www.graphics.com
This is a great page. It features job listings, links, fonts, and announcements.
The Magazine Rack
http://graphics-rack.com/webdesign.html
This is not a magazine, but a good way to search for magazines.
Diesel Design
http://www.dieseldesign.com/home.html
This is a great site to look for ideas. The layout and art is beautiful. It has a gallery that feartures different designers and photographers. I want my portfolio to look like Diesel's.

Internet Story:The Internet Party
- There is a group in Switzerland which calls itself The Intenet Party. Based in Munich, it's goal is to serve as a Internet-based forum for political discussion.
The party was officially formed in th beginning of November, 1998, and, like any party, this one has a president. His name is Guido Honegger. "We want to use the Net to make politics faster and simpler," said Honegger. The founding members consist of 10 local programmers and Technology workers.
The country's main political parties, such as the Christian Democrats, Social and Free Democrats, have Web sites, but the dicussion forums are not frequently used for their intended purpose. On the Internet Party site, members will democratically decide on the months' topics of discussion. These discussions will determine their political platforms and whether or not they submit a candidate for office
The Internet Party currently has 600,000 users in Switzerland. Honegger said that number is expected to grow to atleast 1,000,000 by the year 2000. 20 percent of the current users want to be politically active, according to a poll.
Honegger, who is also head of Agri.ch of Brugg, which manages IT systems for Switzerland's farmer's union, said, "We want to bring a fresh wind to the political process, and we can do that outside of the structure of the old political parties."
The Web site was opened November, 19 1998, and for any Switzerland natives who are interested in politics or the Internet Party you can visit the site at http://www.internetpartei.ch.
