Shauni D. Lowrance's Research Project

Synopsis:  My goal for this research project is to make others aware of the current regulations and crusade against child pornography.  This topic interests me a great deal because of all the recent news about the number of violent crimes committed against children.  There was lots of press coverage and a big push for legislation in the early 1990s but as of late the adrenaline has seemed to slow and talk has quieted down. Below I have listed both internet and book resources that are both enlightening and intriguing.

Internet Resources: www.igloo.com/first-principles/abstract.html - Images of Children, Crime, and Violence in Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler    This web site is based on a government study that has spanned across three decades. The study shows how some very commercial magazines have also exploited children. This site also connects to other sites that lists regulations on the internet and in public domain.

www.leeds.ac.uk/law/pgs/yaman/child.htm - Regulation of Chhild Pornography  on the Internet  compiled by Yaman Akdeniz  This web site is very beneficial because it links to so many other pages. For general information and where to go to get specific, more detailed information, this is a great page to start. This page also gives information about the regulations being passed in the United Kingdom as well as the United States. This page also gives a timeline of various legislation and regulations that have been passed from the most recent.

www.leeds.ac.uk/laws/pgs/yaman/crackdown.html-Cyber-Rights and Cyber- Liberties (UK) Press Release
This page offers information with regulations in the United Kingdom.  It should be known that this is an international problem, and affects those outside of the US as well.

Other Resources: Akdeniz, Yaman "Governance of Pornography and Child Porngraphy on the Global Internet: A Multi-Layered Approach, in Edwards, L. and Waelde, C eds, Law and the Internet: Regulating Cyberspace, Hart Publishing, 1997, pp 223-241

I recommend this resource because it goes into the regulations that have been enacted and those that are being worked on not only for child pornography but for pornography as a whole.  Mr. Akdeniz has worked very hard on the issue of child pornography, making sure that the information is out there for those who want to know what is going on.

Reisman, Judith,PhD  "Soft Porn"  Plays Hardball-It's Tragic Effects onWomen, Children, andthe Family

I recommend this book because it comes so highly recommended from Dr. Reisman's colleagues.  In this book she shows how the pornography industry exploits women and children, and destroys the foundation of the family.  This book covers more of the pyschological aspect of pornography.
