Violent Earth

Earth as a dynamic planet, changing catastrophically through volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, and meteoric impacts. Causes and effects of these phenomena will be addressed and their impact on human development. Not open to students with credit in or currently enrolled in GEOL 101, 109, or 111. Optional laboratory: GEOL 101L.

GEOL 440

Principles of Seismology

This class will provide upper level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students with a basic overview of the principles of global seismology. Topics covered will include: stress and strain, introduction to the wave equation and its solutions, body waves/ray theory, reflection and refraction, surface waves, earthquake source parameters, and seismic travel-time inversions.
