Dr. Jacqueline MacDonald Gibson

imageDr. MacDonald Gibson is interested in research on topics at the interface between environmental science and public policy. Her work focuses on the mathematical quantification of the probability of harm occurring due to environmental contamination and on quantitative comparisons of policy options for environmental risk reduction. She specializes in constructing mathematic models that represent the sources of environmental contamination, how people become exposed to those contaminants, and the types of human health impacts that result from the contamination. Through these models, she explores how changes in public policies affect the level of harm from contamination. Some of her recent work has focused on modeling the risks due to unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from military training on civilian land. Some 2,000 sites in the United States are contaminated with UXO, and lack of understanding of the associated risks, combined with disagreements about what policies are necessary to limit those risks, have interfered with civilian use of this land. She has also conducted many studies on U.S. water quality policy.

Current Work

imageCurrently, Dr. MacDonald-Gibson is the principal investigator of the United Arab Emirates(UAE) Environmental Health Project. The goals of the project are to asses health risks due to environmental pollution of all kinds in the UAE and to develop a strategy for new policies to reduce those risks.
