Students opinions and thougts on skin cancer and the sun

"I really have never worried about my skin. I tan really easily so I usually just burn once then tan. I'm sure I'll worry about cancer when I am older though" - Sarah, Student at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

"Personally, I worry about skin cancer every time I get burnt. Just the idea that the more times I get burnt, the greater chance I have of getting skin cancer is enough to scare me. I wear sunscreen when it pleases me, usually it takes one burn in the summer to wake me up. Last summer I worked on roofing houses. I had to wear sunscreen everyday and wear a goofy looking hat, but it saved my face from the sun." - Alex, Student at Duke University

"I worry about skin cancer because I am so fair skinned and am a higher risk for it. I do not like to tan myself or lay out. I want to be older with less wrinkles and beautiful and hopefully no cancer - that is my biggest fear! i always wear sunscreen and hats when out in the sun to help protect my skin. I may stay white all year round but its the only way I can help prevent any future problems. Being fair doesn't bother me much anymore. I go to the dermatologist for yearly checkups to be extra careful." - Britton, a student at the University of South Carolina

"I don't worry too much now about skin cancer. I never wear sun screen or anything, I just lay in sun and have fun" - Korry, a student at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

"I like tanning, and while I know it may give me cancer down the road, I would rather trade personal beauty now for cancer later" - Jennifer, a student at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

"I have always been careful of the sun and worn sunscreen, but recently I have started going to the tanning bed. A lot of people talk about how bad it is for you but I really enjoy it. Going to the tanning bed is relaxing for me, almost addictive. By the time I get cancer I'm sure there will be a way to get rid of it easily." - Elizabeth, a student at Wofford College

"I have always spent time out in the sun because I play so many sports. I usually wear spf 4 tanning oil so I'm not worried. I don't ever burn I just get really brown." - Brian, a student at Clemson University

"My mom always tells me stories of how she used to cover herself in castor oil and lay out all day. She doesn't have skin cancer so I'm not scared that I'm going to get it. I don't lay out for hours on end but I do like to spend time at the beach during the summer." - Charles, student at Duke University

"Sure people get skin cancer but the only person I know of who has had it is my grandfather. I'll think about it when I get his age." - Eric, student at Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina
