What's the Big Deal?

Melanoma in teens is a very important issue. Almost all cases of advanced stage melanoma in younger patients could be eliminated if people were better educated on the dangers of melanoma. Keliana had no idea that her mole was cancerous. She did not know what to look for or what the warning signs for melanoma were. Tina thought her mole was unique and never thought that it was cancerous. If either of these girls had been taught the ABCD's of melanoma they would have noticed their abnormal moles much sooner.

The section containing comments from college age kids also illustrates the need for a stronger emphasis on melanoma awareness. Hardly any of the students admitted to being concerned about the health of their skin. It is important that young people are better educated on the dangers of melanoma and the benefits of having abnormal moles removed as soon as changes occur. If parents spent just a little bit of time explaining the risks associated with unusual moles, then very few mother's would be in Elizabeth's place. The key to beating melanoma is catching it in its earliest stages.
