Sketching the Mural....

The couple and I discussed for awhile what sort of mural they wanted. They had an idea of doing Alice and Wonderland, but they didn't want it illustrated like the original Lewis Carrol drawings, for some of those are really rather creepy. But they didn't want just the Disney characters either, because they are a bit too cute. So I decided to make up my own characters, which are sort of hybrids of the original illustrations and the Disney characters. The card guys painting the roses, for example, are almost exactly lifted from the original illustrations, with their scary elements left out. Same with the Mad Hatter. The Caterpillar, on the other hand is a bit more Disney, although I substituted a book and a cup of tea for his traditional hookah (per request of the couple).

It took me one day to sketch each wall, but I was taking classes at the time. I suspect I could have sketched everything out in just one day if I would have had the time available.
