You made an excellent job. At the beginning, I didn''t actually expect that we would go through all the materials. And you''ve tried to clearly answer the questions which I''ve wondered for long time. Thank you very much. Only one thing is that homework was quite heavy, I spend so much time to do it.
The class was taught well and quite helpful in ''refreshing'' me on math techniques I will need for my engineering classes. My only comment concerning the course is that the examinations seem a bit long. In fact, I don''t recall anyone finishing with time to spare on either of the two exams thus far. While on one hand a long exam tests familiarity with the material, on the other hand it is frustrating to not be able to finish when you actually have learned the material.
Great job with the course. I like the fact that you are so attentive to the class needs. You explain things thoroughly. I felt like your exams were appropriate in their difficulty. I liked how you were systematic to every problem and emphasized practice, practice, practice. You were very open to help the students. Some suggestions (in my opinion, which may be different from others): Try to use more examples that are different from the book. Otherwise I could just read the book and not attend lecture and get the same thing. After obtaining the solution, it would be nice if you were to show graphs and how the solution makes physical sense. This makes us feel more connected to the problem. Congragulations on your baby! Wish you and you wife a happy future.
The assignments, quizes and class average was very low. This is strange, as I felt the instructor was clear and a very effective teacher (the best I''ve had at the Math department at Ga Tech). I feel that the class'' low average (including my own) must have been due to a failure in the students to abstractly think about the topics covered by the professor. The only conclusion I can make from this is that we needed to go over more examples in class, so that the problems did not seem quite so new and daunting on the exam. High marks to the teacher''s effort and teaching style...but perhaps more time could be spent trying out different problems at the expense of covering less material. Not sure if this is an acceptable compromise, though...
The class was well structured and you were extremely helpful during office hours. My only recommendation is not to have the class at 8am again. Thanks,
I have gone through many classes in my time at school and in both undergrad as well as grad classes I can honestly say that Dr. Metcalfe is one of the best professors Ive ever had. He is extremely clear in his lectures and is reasonable in his homework assignments and tests. I only wish that he were teaching more grad classes so that I could sign up for them. Do everyone a favor Dr. Metcalfe and continue to teach... you''re too good at it to let it pass you by.
I think the class is very good to help engineering students understand mathematical methods. I think that it was too much material in too short a time. It seemed to go very quickly. The homework assignments were very difficult. I felt, after seeing the test results each time, that there must be something wrong with the way the course material is being conveyed to students. When the class average is failing on both tests, you can''t blame all of the students both times. Something else needs to be evaluated.
Having a professor that could both talk to engineers and explain concepts in math jargon was such a blessing. I felt comfortable enough to show up during office hours and ask questions to my heart''s content. Thanks Jason!
Jason was an excellent instructor. He was fair and was more than willing to help if I had any problems. He covered the majority of the book ( we got to chapter 6, where other classes just got to chapter 3). It was a lot of material to chew...and even though I may have scored average on tests it doesn''t reflect the quality of the course instruction in a negative light.
Metcalfe was very willing to help me on an individual basis when I had difficulty with the material. He also is an engaging lecturer and he does a good job of explaining the ''hows and whys'' of the material, which is very important for a math professor.
Although the material was quite challenging, you made it understandable and feasible. Thanks for a great classroom experience.
Jason, You were a great professor. It is evident that you are extremely passionate and genuinely care about your students and their understanding of the course material. You were extremely fair in your expectations of us as it relates to the information you taught and you reciprocated that fairness in your evaluation of us. That is greatly appreciated. I encourage you to maintain that passion and fairness. Best of luck in your future endeavors.
