3. Why do you host your material at ibiblio?

#

Response

1

because i feel like it. duh.

1

Because it was suggested as the "mother of all mirrors" to us by Distrowatch.

1

Because they asked me to, long long long ago.

1

cause i'd have to pay elsewhere

1

free and reasonably good service

1

I like their ethics, it's free, there's space to mess around, smart people to help me learn stuff and I'm in good ocmpany with other people who feel like I do, stability is good too.

1

I've long been a fan of sunsite...metalab...ibiblio. I like the idea of Free software and knowledge.

1

ibiblio has a large audience, an excellent connection to the internet, and very helpful support staff. The ideals behind ibiblio are similar to my own, which is why I take great pride in being a contributor.

1

My site content consumes a good deal of space, so commercial hosting would be quite expensive. By offering its services for free, ibiblio lets me publish material that I would otherwise not be able to provide to the public. Also, ibiblio has several people expertly managing the servers, and they take downtime very seriously. As a result, I get better service from ibiblio than I would likely get from a commercial Web host.

Slow downloads of Linux, often making other sites faster.

1

surveys

1

the organization of the front page, it's busy as heck, needs some good CSS and some good IA.

1

The upload/contribution stuff is not obvious, mostly owing to the upload instructions being buried. Perhaps this is to ensure that people read the preamble to it, but I don't think that's functioning as the page is designed. And when it broke, I didn't receive an email response to my inquiry. Specifically, if a large upload times out, you're left with a state in which anonymous cannot delete the files, and cannot overwrite them, and you know they're corrupt and so it's unmanageable other than to send email and explain the problem. I did eventually succeed, but from the standpoint of feedback, having to poll ibiblio to see if the stuff winds up there, seems like there must be a better way.

1

Tough one. The least useful one is the one I'm least aware of. Perhaps RSS feed. Don't use it yet

1

I think it's pretty diverse as it is. I'm not sure you can expand on it more without getting to 'watered down'.

1

It's fine as it is. If I ever quit ftping software, I should browse your website. Seems to be a LOT of information here. If I get accepted to play on Jeopardy as a contestant, I'll definately have to spend many hours here :)

1

modules! I'd like to pick what goes on my main page within reason so if I want to see all the recent stuff I can add it as a module, if I need all the linux links, I can add them, etc etc etc. Like Yahoo's my.yahoo.com but not as butt ugly or as filled with ads, but that sort of "one from column A and one from column B" approach would delight me. I never need th elinux stuff, or I'd only need one link to the linux world, so all those links are extra [on the current page] and just make me feel that it's not the place for me because I'm not geek enough.

20. What would you like removed from the ibiblio main page?

#

Response

1

Can't think of anything

1

everything

1

It's not as cluttered as distrowatch, but it could be improved by something along the lines of differentiating the most important items from the least important. Remove every pixel that doesn't matter to most of your visitors and leave only the ones that do. Surely a little clickstream analysis would provide the answers?
