RELAY FOR LIFE,

April 27th-28th , 2001, East Chapel Hill High School.


FRIDAY APRIL 27th:

4:00-6:00 PM

Campsite set-up, Team Registration

  • TEAM CAPTAINS: Register your team and turn in remaining contributions collected by team. Please have your team arrive by 6 pm.
  • TEAMS: Set up campsite.

5:00-6:00 PM

Survivor Registration

  • SURVIVORS: Please arrive by 5:30 to register. Report to stage area by 5:45 pm. Follow instructions by Survivor Coordinators.

All evening

Music from DJ’s Keith and Trena Adams of Interactive Entertainment

  • Keith and Trena will play requests and are set up for Karaoke!

6:00-6:15 PM

Opening Ceremony

  • Welcome: Relay Chair Marc Huber
  • Guest Speaker: Denis Guttridge, ACS post-doctoral research fellow will talk about the ACS, research, and what the Relay means to him.
  • ALL ATTENTION TO STAGE -no set-up at this time. 

6:15-6:30 PM

Survivors Ceremony

  • Relay Co-chair, Kathy Whaley, and Survivors Chair, Carole Cain, honor survivors.
  • Guest Speaker: Dr. Norris Brock Johnson, Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will speak about his personal experiences with cancer.
  • Sharon Polo reads the names of survivors.
  • ALL ATTENTION TO STAGE -no set-up at this time.
  • SURVIVORS: Ceremony begins. Thank you for coming!

6:30-6:45 PM

Survivors Lap

  • Bagpiper, Bruce Wright, plays.
  • Survivors walk first lap
  • Caregivers, loved ones and American Cancer Society researchers accompany survivors on second lap.
  • SURVIVORS: Ambulate the first lap (that means, “Move the best and most creative way you know how.”).
  • TEAMS: Cheer on your cancer survivors.

6:45-8:30 PM

Keith and Trena keep the music going.

  •  

8:30-9:00 PM

Music performed by the Loreleis.

  • The Loreleis are an a capella choir made up of students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

9:00-9:15 PM

Luminary Ceremony.

  • Speaker: Guest speaker remembers loved ones
  • Loreleis perform a special song.

·         The lights are dimmed and the candles are lit in the luminary bags.

·         Take a moment to honor our cancer survivors and remember those who have passed away from cancer.

9:30 PM-11 PM Midnight

Featured Band – Chasing Glinda

·         Contemporary classic rock cover band, consisting of members, Jim Baird, Bill Baucom, Kurt Melges and Bob Christian.

11 PM-Midnight

Keith and Trena ease us into the night.

“Midnight” Pizza Party

·         Pizza available at concession stand.

12:00-7:00 AM

Late night events

  • Movies and video games at the stage, sponsored by Keith and Trena.

SATURDAY, APRIL 28th:

Cancer Control Events 

  • All sorts of games and educational activities, some of which actually having to do with cancer!

10:00 AM-Noon

Relay Music Festival

·         Special thanks to Cat Moleskie, of Weaver Street Market, for helping us find these great performers.

·         Self-described, “Middle-aged, old farts,” who’ve played in the area for 6 years.

Tae Kwon Do demonstration – Allen Tae-Kwon-Do

·         Tae Kwon Do school in Chapel Hill

Closing Ceremonies

Awards:

·         Most money raised by a team

·         All teams, please clean your areas and anyone available, please help us pick up trash, so that we are invited back to East Chapel Hill High School again next year.
