Dr. Michal Grinstein-Weiss is an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work, which is among the top ranked schools of social work in the country. Her research interests focus on public policies related to issues of economic inequality and social development. Specifically, she is interested in policies and programs that promote the well-being of low-income families and their communities. Dr. Michal Grinstein-Weiss is the founder and leader of the UNC Assets Research Group, UNC.

Dr. Grinstein-Weiss received her Ph.D. in social work from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Michal earned her master's degree in economics from the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and received both her master's and bachelor's degrees in social work from the University of Haifa, Israel. Before coming to North Carolina, Michal was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center of Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.

Dr. Grinstein-Weiss has been selected as the winner of the 2011 Society for Social work and Research Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Achievement Award. “The Distinguished Achievement Award recognizes cumulative career accomplishments that set the awardee apart from other leaders in social work research regarding the extent to which their contributions have advanced the state of the art of social work research and/or its utilization."
