Africa:

Current News Sources:

  • Africa News Online
  • An excellent source for current news and information about Africa.  You can look up news by nation and by subject.
  • Washington Post: Africa
  • The Washington Post Africa Post Africa page.  This site will provide limited country information and AP and Washington Post articles on Africa.  Very limited in content.
  • BBC News | Africa
  • Similar to the Washington Post page--but better.
  • Le Monde diplomatique: Afrique
  • French.  Good if you want to know what the French are saying about Africa.  Like other non-Africa specific sites this source does not have much Africa related materials.  The articles it does have tend to be good.

    General Information:

  • Africa Online
  • One of the very best Africa related pages.  Very slick.  Covers a wide array of topics ranging from "News" to "Kids."   If you look under "News and Information" you call up a long list of online African newspapers.  "Africa Online" also has pages devoted to Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.
  • Pan African News Agency
  • News agency based in Dakar, Senegal.  Authored in French and English.  A good source for basic information about African countries.  A new page is under construction which will apparently provide links to all the Africa based online media (newspapers, radio web casts, and television).  To access this new page  click on "Visitez le nouveau site du rapide en réalisation".
  • ArabNet
  • An excellent online resource for the Arab world in the  middle east and north Africa.  Provides information about individual nations.   Has many links to other related web pages.
  • African Studies WWW (U. Penn)
  • The best Africa relevant site that is managed by a university.   This site has many useful links to Africa relevant sites.  Definitely worth a look.
  • Index on Africa
  •  This page is maintained by The Norwegian Council for Africa.  It has two useful features.  The first is basic information on all the nations of Africa.  The second are links to pages on a variety of topics relevant to African studies.
  • INCORE internet country guides
  • This is perhaps the essential starting point for anyone looking for web content on specific African countries.  INCORE provides the most comprehensive list of Africa related links I have found to date.  The problem with this site is that not all the African countries are listed.
  • Afric Network
  • This site is primarily in French and is currently under construction.  I believe that it will eventually provide general information about most African nations.  Now you can get information about Senegal and the Central African Republic.  This site also has information about the Liberian Broadcast Network: Liberia's short-wave radio station.

    Politics and Human Rights

  • Association of Concerned Africa Scholars (ACAS)
  • This is a group of scholars and students of Africa dedicated to formulating alternative analyses of Africa and U.S. government policy, developing communication and action networks between the peoples and scholars of Africa and the United States, and mobilizing support in the United States on critical, current issues related to Africa. This site has many news stories about current political events in Africa and a handful of links to other sites.
  • Africa Policy Home Page
  • This site also deals with policy issues related to Africa.  Many reports on various policy issues have been posted on this site.
  • African Policy Information Center
  • In their own words: The primary objective of the Africa Policy Information Center (APIC) is to widen the policy debate in the United States around African issues and the U.S. role in Africa, by providing accessible policy relevant information and analysis usable by a wide range of groups and individuals. You will find a number of interesting policy oriented documents and background papers posted here, some of which you have to purchase.
  • Contemporary Conflicts in Africa
  • This page has extensive information on a number of conflicts in Africa.  If you are interested in this topic, this page is a must.  It also has extensive links to other pages on related topics.
  • ReliefWeb: Home page
  • Virtual Library on International Development

  • World Music Home Page
  • Africassette Music
  • Africa Song Records - The African Music Superstore.
  • Study Abroad in Africa:

  • University of Minnesota Study Abroad Programs
  •  Miscellaneous:

  • African Studies Quarterly
  • This is an electronic academic journal.  It has the look and feel of a 'paper' publication.  They publish standard academic articles in a standard academic journal format.  It has just one link: to the University of Florida African Studies home page.  This latter site might be worth looking at.
  • AfreeNet Construction Page
  • This page is under construction.  All I know is that it is based in Nigeria.
  • AFRICA INTELLIGENCE
  • This site publishes four Africa related news journals (two in English, two in French).  Although you can read a summary of the articles for free you have to pay to read the entire text..
