WS-FTP
This
program allows you to transfer files from your H: drive to your home computer
and back. As we covered in lab, this was the program used to upload to the Web
before the "public_html" folder uploaded them automatically. You can
also use it to transfer files for other classes and work on them in different
locations. Keep in mind that it copies these files from one location
to another, so the original file remains on your H: drive. You must transfer
the edited copy back to the "public_html" folder in order for the
changes to be published on the Web.
How
to get WS-FTP
- Go to
UNC's shareware site at http://shareware.unc.edu.
- Click
on "software," then scroll to near the bottom of the list to "WS
FTP LE."
- Download
the program according to the directions. (Be sure to remember where you put
the files. The "program files" folder on your C: drive is a good
place.)
- For easy
access, create a shortcut on your desktop by going to the WS-FTP folder, right
clicking on blue icon and choosing "create shortcut".
Using
WS-FTP
- When
you open the program, the "session properties" box will appear.
Fill in the following information:
- Profile
name: Ipswitch
- Host
name/address: isis.unc.edu
- Host
type: auto detect
- User
ID and password: your onyen ID and password
- When
you click "OK" the files on your H: drive appear on the right. On
the left are the files on your computer.
- Highlight
the "public_html" folder on the right if you want to copy all of
your Web files. You can click around to choose specific files to copy also.
- Be sure
to choose a location to put your files that you can find on your computer.
On the top of the left side, it will tell you where it will put the files.
Use "chg dir" to choose a different directory, or simply type it
in the box. Choosing C:\ allows you to browse through all of the files on
your C: drive.
- Use the
arrows in the middle to copy files from one location to the other.
- Close
the program and work on your files in Dreamweaver (or another program if you're
doing something else).
- Be sure
to transfer the files back to your H: drive. They must be in the "public_html"
folder to show up on the Web.
Things to
Remember
- Always
back up your files! This allows you keep updated copies of your Web site (or
other files) on both your home computer and the H: drive. It's always good
to keep a copy on a zip disk, too. Better safe than sorry.
- Clicking
"refresh" in FTP will make sure the most recent version of your
files show up. Be sure to do this if you've made changes to files since you
logged on to FTP.
