This program serves as an introduction
and resource guide to the many layers of Lumbee culture and history. It
discusses the history of the Lumbee religion and musical expression, the ways
in which our religion is expressed in current times, and includes a
bibliography of resources about Lumbees. The information in the history and
bibliography sections will be continually updated for accuracy and to include
new information, links, bibliographic resources, etc., so visit often!
The History
section is a highly speculative account of the early period of contact between
Lumbee ancestors and Europeans, the years when Christianity first came to us.
The story continues through the twentieth century, when Lumbees gained much
political and social autonomy, and independence that served our faith and our
churches well. Lumbee political and social history is told alongside our
musical history.
The Bibliography section is a reference guide to books, articles and audiovisual
materials that illuminate Lumbee culture and religion even further. It has a
particular emphasis on sources that shed light on Lumbee history, culture and
religion as they fit into regional and national history.
