Sounds of Faith

VIDEO, 14 MINUTES

Sounds of Faith takes a personal look at the vibrant tradition of gospel music among the Lumbee Indians of North Carolina. The filmmaker gives the audience a unique view of the issues confronting an Indian community trying to pass its musical and spiritual traditions to younger generations. Visiting revivals, powwows, and the filmmaker's family gatherings, Sounds of Faith is a fascinating story of how one Indian community sustains itself through song. It has screened at film festivals, including the 1997 American Indian Film Festival and the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, and been used in classrooms and conferences all over the country to explore contemporary issues of race, religion and identity.
