festivals and has sparked serious discussion about the meaning of Native
American identity. It is distributed by Women

Reverence’Äù (Sacred Land Film Project),
a film about Native American sacred places, and is currently in graduate school
at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is also the Coordinator of the Lumbee River Fund, a community-based
Lumbee history preservation project. Please see Malinda's resume.
Judy Kertesz is
presently working on a Ph.D. in the History of American Civilization at Harvard
University. She hopes that everything she does brings honor to all of her
ancestors: Native American, African, and Jewish. Email Judy at kertesz@fas.harvard.edu, or see her resume.
Sounds of Faith takes a personal look at the
vibrant tradition of gospel music among the Lumbee Indians of North Carolina.
The filmmaker gives the audience a unique view of the issues confronting an
Indian community trying to pass its musical and spiritual traditions to younger
generations. Visiting revivals, powwows, and the filmmaker's family gatherings,
Sounds of Faith is a fascinating story of how one Indian community sustains
itself through song. It has screened at film festivals, including the 1997
American Indian Film Festival and the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, and been
used in classrooms and conferences all over the country to explore contemporary
issues of race, religion and identity.
