My God! How they talked!

A collection of dialogues between Tarheels and Mahatma Gandhi

The collection of dialogues here is formed of student responses to the final assignment question for this course.  Except for minor revisions, my responsibility as editor has been confined to drafting the introduction and conclusion (as is expected of editors!).

The dialectic spirit informing all these dialogues strives to emulate Gandhi’s writings, particularly Hind Swaraj (or for those more familiar with purely Western philosophy a more suitable analogy may be Socrates’ approach to inquiry, or for the religious the best analogy would be the dialogue between Arjun and Krishna in the Bhagwad Gita).  It was heartening to realize that such a spirit of inquiry is still possible.  Why heartening?  Because for me, it represents hope for teaching and learning.

Letters to the Editor

This is a collection of letters written by students to various newspapers.  By writing these letters, students tried to generate public awareness on issues of concern to them.  It was an act of satyagraha, in its own way.  Gandhi used to engage in similar activities, and being a newspaper editor himself, would have appreciated such an effort.
