Patrick Murphy's Home Page

Welcome to my home page. My name is Patrick Michael Murphy and I am a Ph.D. graduate from the Department of Linguistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
My professional interests include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Syntactic theory, especially within the framework of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), but I also draw from the Government-Binding, Construction Grammar and Cognitive Grammar frameworks. My dissertation sought to codify Cognitive Grammar notions within HPSG. I am interested in word order and "movement" phenomena, the effects of pragmatic concerns on order and interpretation, markedness, voice and typology.
  • Instructional technology, or integrating technology into the classroom. I have been fortunate enough to receive several instructional technology awards, allowing me to use new tools to make my teaching more effective.
  • Computational linguistics: I feel that the computer is a tool more linguists should take advantage of. I have used electronic corpora and computational models of language to guide my analyses.
  • Slavic languages and Slavic linguistics. My studies in Russian, Serbo-Croatian and Old Church Slavonic have kept me interested in both the languages and cultures involved. Many of my syntactic topics have touched upon areas of interest to Slavicists.
  • Desktop publishing and typography. I enjoy all aspects of the printed word, being an avid collector of fonts and graphics. I'm a hobbyist fontographer; you can find some of my fonts over at myfonts.com.
