Background: A former knight of the Count of Braunschweig, Hammond is simply masterful with his axe, and though he was rather lacking in courtly grace during his tenure as a squire, he tends to think that this training is what now elevates him above the lesser Socii of Rabenstein. Arriving at Rabenstein with Lady Enelle von Braunschweig in 1196, he assumed the position of Sergeant of the fledgling Covenant's garrison. In 1207 he was granted the title Marshal of Frohnleiten by the Canons of Seckau Abbey, and he now serves to defend the growing village (just north of Rabenstein). As its Marshal, he sits on the village council and presides over the administration of justice in the name of the Bishop (and the lady Enelle at nearby Rabenstein). Although he dislikes his frequent role on the village council in arbitrating petty farming disputes, he enjoys the respect that he has earned. Following the example of Marshal John of Bruck, Hammond has administered to the town with a sense of fairness and honesty (aside from the mischevious attention he gives to young women of the village). Having dreamed of greatness, Hammond is pleased with his recent rise in stature and hopes to be given land from the Bishop in the near future to secure his future as a Ministeriales. In recent months, Hammond has grown more independent of nearby Rabenstein, particularly since he resides within Fröhnleiten instead of the Covenant, though he keeps their secrets from the villagers and knows to turn to their wisdom in times of peril. | |||||||||
