Autobiography

I was born in Shenyang, the biggest city of North-Eastern China. There I spent all my childhood. I've been interested in language, culture and art of different countries since I was a little child. My parents bought me a lot of books, music cassettes and most of them are classic. I especially loved Russian classic novels and music. I was deeply attracted by Pushkin's poems, by Tolstoy's novels, by the fabulous music and dance of the ballet Swan Lake.

So when it was time for me to choose a major for my college education, I undoubtedly decided to study Russian. I began my study of Russian in Sep. 1995 in Beijing Foreign Studies University, which is very famous for language studies. My purpose was to try to build a bridge for the culture communication between China and Russia, two big countries in the world. In my third year in the university, I was selected to pursue an advanced study of Russian language at Pushkin Institute of Russian Language. During this one-year study, I not only developed my Russian language, but also visited many famous places in Moscow and Petersburg, watched many ballets, dramas, and operas. Further more I learnt more about Russian people's life. All of them broadened my horizon. How I hope all of my compatriots could know them too! Since then I have decided to devote myself into promoting the culture exchange of different countries and nations.

In the last months of college, I was busy with writing my B.A. thesis, which was about the metro of Moscow. I decided to reveal the social and art value of the Moscow subway to my colleagues. However at that time I could not find any books related to this topic in the libraries of Beijing in China, so I tried to access to some Russian websites. Thereafter I found a lot of information I needed and finished my thesis smoothly. With the help of Internet my thesis won the Excellent Graduation Thesis Prize of our college. From that time on I began to be interested in information technology. I found a faster and more convenient way to realize my dream - the information highway. There is no doubt that to grasp this technique will be very useful for my future development. Therefore I decide to apply for the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, focusing on the information science major.

Now I am studying here, which means I started a systematical study of management and applying of information, especially in the respect of information transfer, information management, including the selection, organization, storage, retrieval, dissemination and utilization of information resources. With these skills I can build a web site of culture information, which could be written in Chinese, English and Russian. People can check news and interchange information of different cultures on it. I will also provide more links with other related web sites all over the world. Therefore I will not only build a "bridge", but a "net" for all the people who are interested in the international culture exchange. I can see an exciting future in it and I wish to fulfill my dream one day.
