Setup Your Laptop For The Wireless/ Wired Network
In order to use your computer on the UNC-Chapel Hill data network you will need to configure your computer properly. Instructions on how to get connected can be obtained by simply clicking above on your computer's operating system.
Getting connected to the UNC-Chapel Hill network involves two actions: configuring your computer for the network and registering your ethernet card. If you purchased a CCI computer and attended the training session at CTOPS then your computer should be pre-configured and ready to plug in without following these steps.
To begin configuring your network (Ethernet) card, you should have already installed the hardware in your machine. If not, please install the card and then return to these directions. Your computer may ask you for your Windows 2000 CD-Rom while configuring your Ethernet card, so be sure to have them handy.
1. Click on the Start Menu (bottom left of your screen). Highlight SETTINGS.
2. Highlight CONTROL PANEL and click the left mouse button once.
3. In the Control Panel window, double click the NETWORK AND DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS
icon, and then double click the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION icon. Your Network
window will look similar to the example, though your 'connect using:' may be
different.
4. To configure TCP/IP: Highlight INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) and click on PROPERTIES. A new window will open.
5. Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'. Be sure to click on the OK button after you finish entering the above information.
6. Return to your desktop and right click on the MY COMPUTER
icon. Highlight and click PROPERTIES; a new window will open.
7. Click the tab labeled NETWORK IDENTIFICATION.
8. Click the PROPERTIES button; a new window opens.
9. Select the 'Computer Name' field, and type your Onyen. Next select the 'Workgroup' button and enter the name of your residence hall in the text box. If your residence hall name is more than one word, type an underscore (shift + hyphen) instead of a space.
You will receive a welcome message to your workgroup.
Click OK and restart your computer.
1.On your computer, click the "Start" button on the lower left hand corner of your screen. When the menu "pops up", highlight and click "RUN". Next, type cmd and click the OK button.
2.In the new screen that appears, type IPCONFIG /ALL and press Enter.
3.You will see the Windows 2000 IP Configuration information similiar to this, but your numbers will be different! Write down the Physical Address number in the Ethernet adapter section exactly as it appears. Your Ethernet adapter address will begin with 00. If your number begins with 44- or 45-, you are looking at the wrong number. This is your Modem Adapter Address which will not work.
If the Ethernet card does not appear in the window,
try to:
1). remove the card in the device manager and
add it again
2). make sure the card is completely intalled
in its slot inside the computer.
An RCC can happily assist you with this.
Once you are have gotten your
Ethernet Adapter Address you will register your card by going to the Onyen
services page at onyen.unc.edu. "DHCP Registration" is the third option
from the bottom. Here you will need your Adapter Address, Onyen, and password
to register your computer. After successfully registering you should be
able to connect within 15-20 minutes.
