In this unit, your group will choose a problem or issue facing the community. You will research this issue, come up with a bibliography of sources, and present your own views to the class in a 10-minute persuasive speech.
For the sake of keeping things relevant and not too broad, we'll consider UNC your community. Therefore, if you choose an issue such as crime, free speech, drugs, etc., you must relate it to the university environment. Also, your take on the issue must be genuinely controversial, and not vague or so obvious that no one would disagree with it. For instance, if your topic is rape, don't simply take the position that rape is a serious crime and the campus community should be more concerned about it. Instead, you might argue that a student who persuades an unwilling partner to have sex by plying him or her with alcohol SHOULD or SHOULD NOT face the same penalty as someone who uses physical force. One may legitimately argue either side of this question, while you'd have to go a long way to find someone in favor of rape.
The requirements for this unit consist of one
feeder assignment and a speech. In addition, you will be expected
to review and evaluate three of your peers' speeches.
