Advanced Quantitative Methods - Continuous Updating
of Reading List
Advanced Quantitative Methods Committee (Fall 2001):
Kenneth A. Bollen
Guang Guo
François Nielsen (Chair)
Following discussions during September
2001 the Advanced Quantitative Methods Committee decided to adopt procedures
to update the Ph.D. Comprehensive Exam reading list continuously, and to
invite participation in that process by people outside the Committee including
other members of the Sociology faculty and graduate students. The suggested
procedure for updating the reading list is as follows
-
the current version of the reading list
is available on the web as a PDF file at the address
http://www.unc.edu/courses/soci209/docs.htm
then click on the link for the most recent version
of the reading list
-
at any time members of the Committee,
other members of the faculty, Sociology graduate students, or anyone concerned,
can send suggestions for updating the list to the Chair of the Advanced
Quantitative Methods Committee (currently François
Nielsen), preferably by email
-
suggestions can be made for replacing
a reference item, deleting an item, adding an item, or adding or deleting
an entire section of the reading list
-
reference items need not be formatted
in any specific way (the Chair will take care of that), but please provide
the full first names of the authors (when available) rather than initials
-
the Chair will adjudicate on whether
to incorporate a suggestion to the list, consulting with other members
of the Committee as needed; the Chair will be more likely to involve the
Committee when the suggested modifications involve deleting important items
or changing an entire section
-
at suitable intervals the Chair will
incorporate the accepted suggestions and post the revised version of the
reading list on the web; however, the reading list on which the Ph.D. comprehensive
exam is based will be "frozen" (no change will be made) one month
prior to the date of the exam
