Midterm
Released Fri 30 March - DUE Fri 20 April 2001
To make the midterm realistic I am assigning the Ph.D. comprehensive exam
as given on 2 March 2001, with the following modifications:

Instead of 4 questions, answer any 3 of the 6 questions; i.e., you
do not have to answer Q1 if you choose not to.

Do not write more than 3 double-spaced, normal-margin, legible-type pages
for each answer.
Concentrating on giving a clear, coherent, concise answer is more important
than packing in citations, quotes, etc. You may use any inanimate reference
for the exam. Also, feel free to discuss the questions with other members
of the class, but your answer has to be the result of your own thinking
and writing.
