Occupations

Life is a blend of our occupations - those work, fun, care-taking, and spiritual  ways we spend our time.   Occupations may be solitary or social, doing or being, links to our past and bridges to our future.  Occupations shape us and through what we do we shape and influence our world.  I am what I do.....

The Beach  -

NO! The Mountains!

Having been raised in the mountains of southern West Virginia I have had a life-long love affair with the open and flat beaches of North and South Carolina.  For years I thought that's where we'd end up but over the past few years I realized that the coast is just too conservative politically and fast becoming an environmental disaster. I'll still visit the beaches - Atlantic Beach NC, Ocean City NJ, Chincoteague, VA  but just visiting. In July 2008 I finally admitted that the mountains called me home and we relocated to  Asheville NC a cool mountain town that blends traditional mountain  culture with new age and other contemporary art, craft, and music cultures.  A very hip place with arts, microbreweries and a great downtown!

West Virginia

Yes -  as previously mentioned - I am a native West Virginian.  I was born and raised in Bluefield, WV. The older I get the more I realize the influence of my West Virginia roots - not just on what I do (like quilt) but in what I value (independence, kinship,  honesty....).

Although I can't live there - its' just not Asheville! I can't leave there either. Every summer I take a trip to WV usually to Ripley WV for  the Mountain State Arts & Crafts Fair and a stop at Tamarack for my Appalachian and mountain fix for the year. A good Bluefield link... Bluefield Daily Telegraph

On July 16, 2005 I went to Bluefield for a gathering of my high school classmates - 34 years! It was great fun and I hope to go every year. Our BHS Class of '71 website is great with lots more pictures and class news.

There's a larger version of this picture on Page 2 of my pictures - the small picture is a link to the larger one!

My Family

As I write I realize how closely linked I am to my family - my husband and daughter, mother and father, sisters and brother, nieces and in-laws - sister, brother and mother are each an important part of my life. Occupations aren't limited to just doing things but include the people with whom we interact and relate to. Mark, my husband, is my computer consultant and gets credit for walking me through web-site development.  You can see some of my   Pictures - Not Just Family  OR visit my sister Amanda's Web page.

Our daughter Alexandra is 23 and also lives in Asheville.  She'll be graduating from the baking and pastry arts program at AB Tech in May.

Reading, Music and Other Stuff

Reading is another of those family activities - we are all avid readers.  I am a mystery fanatic - one of my current occupations  is listening to books on an I-Pod  as I run, walk, knit, quilt, try to sleep or do house stuff.

Music is almost always playing in our house - I am the lone country music fan  -  Patsy Cline is my idol and inspiration.  Here I am doing a fabulous rendition  of Crazy with Jenny Womack as my back-up singer!

My other fill-in occupation includes persistently pursuing exercise. I am trying now to resurrect  my obsession with spinning . I continue to have a vision of myself fit and trim and loving to exercise .... at some point in my future!
