topic: Dangers associated with skydiving

section IA: introduce topic and keywords
For my treasure hunt, I plan on exploring the dangers that are associated with skydiving. While exploring this area, I want to answer the questions: how often do people die skydiving, how does modern technology aid in safeguarding skydivers, and how often do parachutes malfunction? My intended audience for this project is my sister. I am pursuing this because she intends on skydiving before getting married in June, and I want her to think twice before putting her life in danger.

section V: mini essay (option 4: dark side of the net)

One of the most significant problems that concern many online shoppers is the use of credit card fraud via the World Wide Web. Instances of online fraud have grown with the increased use of online shopping. "Credit card fraud causes online merchants to lose about one percent of their transaction volume and sales revenue, while electronic retailers reject six percent of consumer purchase requests because they look suspicious" (1). Gartner, a research firm, predicted that online vendors could lose approximately $160 million during the 2002 holiday season because of crime (1).

McAfee, a company that aims to protect consumers, comprised a list of several suggestions to protect online shoppers from becoming a victim of credit card fraud. The suggestions include: not to buy "spam-advertised" items, to protect all personal information, not to send information requested by email, to only use credit cards with "substitute card numbers," and to verify all transactions (2).

In addition to McAfee, InstaPay also aims at protecting consumers by establishing a new system to aid in the war against identity theft. Their new system, payENKRYPT, helps online consumers "by adding extra layers of encryption to protect your card data on the Internet" (3). This system also helps the various online merchants since it helps to diminish the risk of fraud or charge backs (3).

While online credit card fraud has proved to be a substantial problem with online shopping, measures are being taken in order to minimize the risk. With companies such as McAfee and InstaPay, consumers will benefit from safer online shopping, while merchants feel confident that the orders they fill are legitimate.
