Ongoing
In
collaboration with the CDC, we are studying HPV vaccination behavior among
African American women in rural North Carolina. § Public health
issue: African American and rural women
have high rates of cervical cancer. § Decision science theory: We are examining the role that perceived risk
plays in decisions to vaccinate one’s daughter. We have completed several HPV
vaccination studies and have several others ongoing or just beginning. The HPV research website and the CHIME
Project website
have more information on these studies.

Communicating
genomic test results
With
support of a five year grant from the American Cancer Society, we are
examining how to communicate with women about new genomic tests that assess
breast cancer recurrence risk. § Public health
issue: About 40% of women receiving
chemotherapy for early stage breast cancer may not need it. § Decision science theory: We are examining the optimal way to communicate
the test results to aid decision making about chemotherapy. False-positive
medical tests
We
are conducting several studies of the effects of false positive tests,
including breast and cervical cancer screening. § Public health
issue: The US has the highest rate of
false positive mammograms in the world, with over 1 in 10 mammograms being
false positives. § Decision science theory: We are examining whether anxiety and trust
mediate the long term effects on screening women’s behavior. |
