About Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in the southern part of the continent of Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. It borders South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east. Under the current Mugabe regime Zimbabwe has gone from being one of the most prosperous nations in Africa to currently seeing unprecedented levels of poverty, inflation, and despair. The numbers drive it home:
- The Bank of Zimbabwe reports during 2007 that Zimbabwe's inflation totaled 24,000% -- in 2008 it has riden to 66,000%, which means a $1 purchase today would cost $661y this time next year.
- According to the World Bank life expectancy was 37 in 2005, falling from 39 in 2000.
- Per capita GNI was $340 USD in 2005 falling from $460 USD in 2000.
- Approximately 1/3 of the population is affected by AIDS.
- GDP has been cut in half since 2000, a number that is unprecedented for a country who is not at war.
