Cogeneration Facility Tour
October 17, 2003

The Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Energy have honored UNC's Steam Cogeneration Facility for an exemplary cogeneration project which increases the nation’s electric generation efficiency.

The University owned the electric, water, telephone, and sewer services until the mid-1970's when the Orange Water and Sewer Authority was created to purchase the assets and begin running services for the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

The excellent web site for Energy Services includes a tour of energy services and the Cogen Facility on Cameron Avenue.

The blue glass building, requested by the town for appearances, resulted in greater noise and light impacts on the surrounding neighborhood that had to be solved with innovative reengineering and policies. Students at the top of the facility look out towards Chatham County below and then headed down the stairs after checking that the "pilot light" for the facility is on.
