Duke University, founded in 1924, has its roots in 1838 in Randolph County, North Carolina. There, the insitution that would become Duke University began as Normal College, becoming Trinity College in 1859 when it affiliated with the Methodist Church. In 1892, Washington Duke's endowment and Julian Carr's land made it possible for Trinity College to move to Durham. Distinguishing characteristics of Duke and Carolina emerged during this field lab as we compared the histories, missions, and even the mottos ("Eruditio et Religio" and "Lux Libertas") of the institutions.
