NC Children's Hospital & NC Women's Hospital
November 7, 2003

From the helipad, the students moved to the NC Children's Hospital where Clinical Director Carolyn Viall gave the students a tour of the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) and the play atrium. The NC Children's Hospital is a nationally recognized leader in cystic fibrosis and other respiratory disorders, and more than 33,000 children from all 100 NC counties come to the hospital.

After lunch, Julie Sweedler, Manager of the Women's Health Information Center in the NC Women's Hospital, gave students an overview of the services that the Women's Hospital provides. Nurse Diane Asbill then led the group on a tour of newborn nursery floor. The hospital was designed to offer patients as much comfort and privacy as possible with all private patient rooms. The students were delighted to see the newborn nursery where they watched a day- old baby girl get her diaper changed.

The play atrium in the Children's Hospital is designed to look and feel like a park with lots of games and toys to play with.
